My name is Micki Brushwood, and I am a twenty-three-year-old server now residing in Jackson, MS. Originally from Tampa FL, I moved here in 2017 for college where I went on to graduate with a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University. Moving from Florida to Mississippi was a major change for me, but every day I am still happy I made the decision. Though the culture of Mississippi was unfamiliar to me, it has always been welcoming, and I am blessed to have made so many wonderful friends here. Currently I am proud to call myself momma to two young kittens—Flotsam and Jetsam. Obviously I love Disney and will probably get in the habit of naming my future fur babies after Disney characters.
I am a devoted lover of animals and an advocate for their well-being and rescue. Writing is my greatest joy, but second to that is theatre. I always played the villain growing up in shows, and you know what, I loved it. Painting, sculpting, drawing are my happy space, and I love to enjoy those things with my friends. On occasion I might give something paint stains for fun, just to make it unique. Always the girl who loves a good scare, Halloween is my favorite day of the year. Dressing up, whether it be in costume or in a formal gown has always made me feel confident and beautiful. I am so excited to be competing this year in Mississippi Plus America!
WHY I CHOSE MY PLATFORM
I joined Mississippi Plus America because I wanted to connect to a group of women who were making a difference in our community. My specific platform of interest is helping people with developmental and physical disabilities get the resources and support they need in order to live their best and most productive lives. As an individual born with a visual spatial impairment, I owe the care, assistance, and time others gave me to overcoming my own struggle and going on to graduate college with a 4.0 GPA. It’s my turn to pay it back. My heart was forever changed when I saw the work of an organization known as Joni and Friends in Mississippi and its motto which now my life verse. 2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
I want to be associated with wonderful, kind-hearted women who can teach me how to campaign for a cause and embrace who I am as a person and the beauty I have within even more than any external attributes. Mississippi Plus America truly focuses on what a Miss/Mrs/Ms Mississippi should be about—service. I am thrilled to be surrounded by so many hearts of gold. This organization has opened doors for many women to be a beacon of awareness for a number of platforms, and I want to do that for our differently abled community. This is a chance to raise my voice for the cause I love.
Thanks in advance for your encouraging words AND Support!
